FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT THE SPORTALOOSA REGISTRY
What is eligible spotted blood?
The Sportaloosa's spotted blood can come from either the registered Sportaloosa, Appaloosa or the Knabstrupper.
What is eligible non-spotted blood?
Sportaloosas can be crossed with registered Warmblood, Thoroughbred, Arabian, Andalusian, Lusitano, Friesian, Stock Horse and Quarter Horses of appropriate sport horse type and temperament.
What is ineligible non-spotted blood?
Crosses to horses of any breed not included in the definition of eligible non-spotted blood above are not eligible.
What colours are ineligible?
Crosses to grey, classic roan, paint or pinto horses are not eligible within the second generation (sire and dam). That is, a horse is not eligible if one or both parents are grey, classic roan, paint or pinto, regardless of whether they originate from a breed noted above.
How do I work out if my Sportaloosa is eligible for Studbook One?
Sportaloosas eligible for Studbook One have no more than 2 horses in the fourth generation of eligible non-spotted blood. Every horse in the first 4 generations of a Sportaloosa's pedigree must be of eligible blood.
We've included a couple of examples below (with non-spotted blood shown in aqua).

How do I work out if my Sportaloosa is eligible for Studbook Two?
Sportaloosas eligible for Studbook Two have less spotted blood in the first 4 generations of their pedigree than Sportaloosas that qualify for Studbook One. Studbook Two Sportaloosas have more than 2 horses in the fourth generation of eligible non-spotted blood. Every horse in the first 4 generations of a Sportaloosa's pedigree still must be of eligible blood.
What if some of the horses in the first 4 generations of my horse's pedigree are/were not registered?
Your horse can be entered into the Sportaloosa Open Registry. Only horses whose pedigree is documented/proveable are eligible for Studbooks One or Two.
Why is registration important?
Registration provides certainty of a horse's identity, parentage and age. That makes it a valuable thing for future purchasers as well as breeders. They need to know that what's on a horse's registration certificate is completely true and accurate. That's why, when we issue a registration certificate, we're tough on knowing the details provided are correct.
What are the benefits of registering my horse with Sportaloosa International?
• recognition - published points, awards and accolades for your spotted horse's performance achievements
• verification of parentage, age, identity and eligibility - all information made publically accessible
• acknowledgement as a horse capable of achievement in demanding equestrian disciplines

Can my horse be dual registered?
